"Motivation is probably the most often used catch-all term for explaining the success or failure of virtually any complex task" (Brown 1980;112).In the field of English teaching and learning, many studies have provided statistical evidence that indicates motivation is a predictor of language learning success and individuals who are more motivated will learn another language faster and to a greater degree(e.g. Gardner 1985; Ellis 1994; Tremblay 1995).The author of the thesis finds in the teaching process that important as English is, Many students are often troubled bytheir poor performance because of the lack of motivation. Motivation should be therefore given a central role in evaluating the quality of education and how to motivate students to learn English well is of vital importance. Especially in the Attached Middle School of Inner Mongolia Art College, English, as one of the basic courses has been ignored by both of the students and their teachers for a long time .In the past years, It was very easy for them to make success only by doing well in their specialized courses. In their mind, it's no use of learning English and English is too difficult to learn. Only in recent years, English is being emphasized gradually with the development of the society and the pressure of the canceling of the system of recommending the students for admission to college. But because of the existing problems and restrictions on English teaching, English teaching and learning is a real problem in the Inner Mongolia Art College all the time .It shows that the results of the English teaching fell short of what was expected, the students pay much more attention to their specialized course rather than English; they are poor in the language ability and low in their motivation. So the author of this thesis intends to research into motivation comparatively comprehensively in the hope of attaining two purposes: firstly, study the features of the students' motivational behavior and the problem of the students' motivation in English learning. Secondly, use some teaching methods on the basis of the research results to help enhance students' motivational level. In the author's opinion, a study that links teachers' and learners' actions to persistence and effort in language learning should have a more "real-world' impact. The thesis falls into five parts:Part 1 introduces the background and the aims of the study.Part 2 offers a review of literature. It's concerned with the research into the definition of motivation, the classification of motivation, the motivation of the Chinese high school students in English learning, the comparison between the motivation in learning English of the students in Art School and in the Ordinary School and motivation in foreign language learning.Part 3 shows the process of the study. Firstly, the author analyses the students' motivation in English learning and then tries some kinds of teaching methods toboost the students' motivation in English learning.Part 4 is the results and discussion of the thesis.Part 5 is the conclusion of the thesis.
