The English syllabus for high schools points out clearly and definitely: The purpose of the high school English teaching is mainly to train the students' reading ability. Reading ability plays the most important part in senior high school English studying ,and it is the basic ability in English that senior high school students should have at present. With the development of the education, the test of this ability is increased gradually in the entrance examination to college. In the English tests of last few years, reading part is so difficult that some examinees can hardly complete it in the limited time. Therefore, it is an important mission for the English teachers of high schools to increase reading ability of students. However, the current English reading teaching, teachers, students, teaching materials etc. roughly affect high school students' English reading ability. Analyzing the theories and the basic principle that teachers should follow, the writer talks about the strategies of improving reading ability of high school students.First, the thesis is mainly about the definition of reading skill and reading comprehension ,and the request in the entrance examination to college.Second, this text talks about the factors that affect the students' reading ability .Because influenced by the traditional teaching methods, the teachers tend to over-emphasize the language knowledge in English reading teaching, neglecting the students' corpus position in reading. They are excessively tying down by the surface meaning of the reading materials, don't valuethe function of the non-language information, can't guide the students to understand the sentences in the reading materials correctly, and can't handle the new words which appear in the materials. Influenced by the teaching modes, the students also have some problems, such as with vocabulary, comprehension, related background knowledge, reading habits, logic thought etc.Third, to increase the senior high school students' English reading ability, the teachers must improve teaching methods. the writer ,according to her own teaching experience, puts forward some training methods of increasing high school students' English reading ability: First of all, master the basic language .For example, grasp vocabulary as many as possible; enlarge the related culture background knowledge. Then, train the students' mental statement of reading; Later, train the students' reading habits; Finally, teach the students how to read .For example, teach them how to read the comprehension materials step by step, guide them how to catch the key information, and how to get deep comprehension of the articles. In addition, enhance the training of reading outside classes.
