The Ministry of Education published the Curriculum for Basic Education Reform Compendium (Draft) in 2001, marking a new round curriculum reform of basic education in China. Comprehensive art course as a kind of comprehensive courses established in our country's basic education curriculum reform that requires strenuous effort, embodies the new concepts of educational reform. Currently the art courses in Mainland China are in an experiment phase. The test results from several experiment areas have shown some different opinions regarding the comprehensive art courses, and even some doubts and faltering about them, because of some difficulties appeared in the experiment process. Considering this phenomenon, I have made some comparative research of the reform of art courses in Taiwan, which is quite similar to mainland China's curriculum reform, hoping that some calm thinking and reflections on the reform of art courses in mainland China can be taken. As part of the Chinese nation, Taiwan is also in the implementation of the new 9-year comprehensive courses, and the art course reform in Taiwan has also taken the comprehensive path. The comparative researches of the art courses of the Mainland and Taiwan are currently scattered in some essays, and have not formed a systematic research. This kind of research has profound theoretical and practical meanings for the establishing of art courses with national cultural styles, and educational theories with Chinese characteristics. The article conducts systematic and deep comparative research of the 6 aspects of Mainland's and Taiwan's course setup concepts, objectives, design, editing and choosing of textbooks, assessment of teaching, and teachers' training, etc. Through the comparative research, reflections on the art course reform in Mainland has been taken;and regarding the problems currently appearing in the art course reform, especially the problems of training for a new type of teachers in the reform process, how to integrate all the art categories, and how to set up courses, etc, some thoughts have been offered. And the goal is to explore and build a new type of art education with Chinese characteristic based on Chinese culture and arts.
