A Case Study On The Spirit Of Chinese University

The university spirit is the soul of a university. It has the broad sense and the narrow sense. In the broad sense, it signifies the consensus value obtained by its participants in the course of inheriting and developing campus culture, and a kind of organizational spiritual state formed through precipitation and sublimation of its historical evolution. In the narrow sense, it refers to the specific university spirit, which means a certain university's spiritual appearance or community existent mindset accumulating and developing in its long history. As the spiritual pillar and the source of motivating force of university development, university spirit is not only a kind of immaterial assets, but a kind of normative power. Once excellent and healthy university spirit shaped, it will be transformed into a kind of cohesive force, together with motive power in educational activities, ensure the university to develop harmoniously, healthily and sustainablely.This thesis takes various research methods, such as documental research, comparing, case study and historical research, but the case study is the most important of them, the author also tries his best to combine case study, normative study with historical comparison. Based on the common analysis of university spirit's connotation, elements, evolution, characteristics, functions, the author chooses the spirit of the HUST (abbreviation of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology) as a case, which is known as "the miracle of Chinese higher education development", to make a subtle study, and summarizes the important enlightenment of the HUST spirit for Chinese university's spirit growing.The important conclusions are drawn as following:(1) University spirit not only includes the spirit of humanity, the spirit of searching for and protecting truth, but also the spirit of directly serving society. The characteristics of university spirit manifest in the relative independence, the distinguishing personality and the historical adaptability.
