Having the self-monitoring ability is a mature sign of the person's intelligence development. It is essential to solve problems individually, communicate mutually and adapt to society. It is also assurance of self-development, self-realization and self-improvement. How to effectively cultivate the learning abilities of students has become a subject of concern in today's mathematics education circles. As a matter of fact, training the self-monitoring ability on mathematics is training the students' self-consciousness cultivating the habit and ability of self-evaluation about mathematics activities and teaching the students how to correct and control the methods and skills during the studying process. After re-examining mathematics learning processes, we wouldargue that the fostering of students' self-monitoring abilities is the key to improve their learning abilities.This essay expounds the meaning, contents of self-monitoring, and the structure of self-monitoring on mathematics learning, the principles, method, the teaching model, teaching strategy and main ways of fostering self-monitoring. In the light of theory of the self-monitoring learning ability cultivation in mathematics learning processes and Zimmerman's cyclic model of self-regulated learning, the author has undertaken several practical experiments in order to explore the possibilities of improving students' mathematics learning abilities through training of self-monitoring abilities. Analyzing the outcomes of those experiments, we can draw the following conclusions: (1) The training of the self-monitoring abilities does help to improve student's mathematics learning ability;(2)Self-evaluation plays a key role in fostering the self-monitoring learning ability;(3)The enhancement of the self-monitoring ability in mathematics solving problem depends on that the learner of problem-solving is good at to apply "heuristic word" of Polya and sum up "heuristic words" of myself; (4)The communication between members of a mathematical study group is the driving force for the improvement of the self-monitoring learning ability.
