Social changes have been taking place historically in China, with great changes in social system, values, modes of conduct, also large-scaled system reform in higher education institutions. Under this circumstances, this essay aims to analyze the effect of human capital and social capital on scientific research performance of teaching staff who plays important role in higher education institutions.In recent years, higher education institutions start to capital- operating with the common idea of earning the largest profit by the least capital. Higher education institutions own both human capital and rich social capital only by exerting whose great effect could make higher education institutions maintain their standing advantageous position in severe competition. Through this research on the effect of human capital and social capital on scientific research performance of teaching staff in higher education institutions, what this essay aims is that, to improve human capital and social capital of teaching staff step by step and also improve scientific research performance, to provide valuable theoretical basis and practical countermeasures for reform and competition in higher education institutions.Firstly of all, the essay makes concise introduction to former research on the concepts and theories of human capital and social capital, gives clear description of the concerned definition and concepts, points out the significant effect of human capital and social capital on scientific research performance of teaching staff in higher education institutions. Since the lack of thoroughness and broadness in former research, there comes four hypotheses and their theoretical premises in this essay : firstly, the relationship between human capital and scientific research performance is of positive correlation on thebasis of rational choice with the consequence of high validity of human capital, rich achievement of scientific research, thus better scientific research performance. Secondly, there might be variety of scientific research performance thanks to how actively and how sensitively the similar human capital reacts to society. Thirdly, scientific research performance depends on social capital if not perfect correlation between human capital and scientific research performance. Fourthly, social capital could upgrade human capital, strengthen scientific research, and improve scientific research performance. With the raising up of the hypotheses, empirical research is carried out, the concerned concepts and corresponding variable index are ascertained.This essay makes descriptive analysis and deductive analysis to the data which come from the census of philosophy and social science teaching staff and their scientific research achievements in Jilin University, from the census of philosophy and social science teaching staff and their academic exchange in Shandong University, Zhongshan University and Jilin University. All these analyses are done by exploiting theories of human capital and social capital, by the combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis from the point of view of economic sociology. The descriptive analysis includes such following analytical measures as frequency, percentage, average, while deductive analysis includes such following statistic measures as correlation analysis and contingency table. Qualitative analysis exploits interviewing individuals who came from "Seminar on Philosophy and Social Science Teaching and Scientific Research Backbones from National Higher Education Institutions" during March and April in the year of 2005.This essay verifies the mentioned hypotheses by analyzing the concerned data and cases, here draws the conclusion that both human capital and social capital affect scientific research performance, that variety of scientific research performance does occur to teaching staff with same human capital, that social...
