The Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program, contemporaneous with the New Culture Movement and the May 4th Movement, finds its root in the founding and activities of the Association of Studying in France and the Sino-French Association of Education more or less around the Revolution of 1911. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, significant social, political and economic changes occurred along with the development of the national capitalist industry and the ongoing revolutionary tides. After the Revolution of 1911, more young people yearned towards seeking new knowledge overseas and the enthusiasm of studying abroad was on the upsurge. These young people's target disciplines had switched from military studies, law and politics into science and technology, with the purpose of "importing the world civilization into China". France became a place of special attraction for young Chinese and the Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program came into being at such a historic moment.The Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program is a riptide integrated in the spring tide of ideology liberation at that time. It made a powerful strike on the feudal culture in the Chinese tradition, accelerated the promulgation of Marxism in China, fostered and brought up a large team of elites for the revolution and socialist construction movements in China and made positive and deep impacts on the evolution of modern education in China. The global foresight reflected in this movement as well as the spirit of unflagging pursuit for truth and determination in reforming and overthrowing the irrational regime in old China are indeed a piece of valuable treasure for the later generations.This dissertation intends to expatiate on the impacts on the modern education in China made by the Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program. Part 1 presents an overview of the movements of Chinese students studying abroad in the contemporary and modern times to introduce the Movement of Going to France forWork-&-Study Program and gives a detailed description about the full evolution of the Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program and discusses how these Chinese students studied, worked and struggled in France. Part 2 mainly discusses the educational achievements of this Movement. Part 3 discusses the education reforms in the era of the May 4th Movement, the impacts made by the Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program on the education evolution in China, the features of challenges faced by modern education in China and the significance of the Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program reflected in modern education in China. Discussions are also made on the educationalists appearing in this movement and their thoughts and ideas as well as their impacts on the Chinese modern education. Part 4 discusses the enlightenments made by the Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program on modern education in China and introduces the significance of the combination of modern education in China with production activities before a final remark is made in this part on how such combination should be carried out in modern education in China. Part 5, as the conclusion of this Paper, analyses and summarizes the historical effect of this Movement as well as the enlightenment valuable to us.This paper combed through the evolution of the Movement of Going to France for Work-&-Study Program aiming to enlighten us through the study of this Movement and providing a historical reference for the modern education in China.
