The present study re-examined the relationship between Chinese phonological awareness and children's reading development. The results of correlation and regression analyses indicated that Chinese phonological awareness contributed significantly to the reading proficiency among primary school students. The results of further analyses showed that onset-rime awareness was the strong predictor of Chinese reading in second graders, rime awareness, phoneme awareness and tone awareness in fourth graders and phoneme awareness in sixth graders respectively. And visual phonological tasks were better predictors of Chinese reading than auditory phonological tasks.
