The new English Curriculum Standard has set "stimulating the interest, building the confidence and improving the learner's autonomy in English learning..." as goals of Junior English teaching. As a result, how to improve the learner's autonomy and what kind of teaching model is the most suitable model for our students have become the problems to be studied. In this thesis, the author first writes about the original thinking of autonomy both in the western countries and ancient China. Then the author points out the necessity and feasibility of developing learner autonomy in elementary schools. In the second chapter the author defines the term of learner autonomy and summarizes the factors that influence it and the features of it. Based on the theory the author makes a survey, then analyzes the main factors which influence English learner autonomy in the current teacher-centered classroom teaching model, and argues that this model, aiming at teaching language points, should be changed, because this traditional teacher-centered classroom-teaching model goes against the development of the learner autonomy.
