Chinese mass education, which has a rather important status in the mordern history of Chinese education, originated from the end of Qing Dynasty, then rose on the middle -later stage in Republic of China. Sichuan's mass education developed with Chinese mass education at the same time. It makes Sichuan became one of the original areas of Chinese mass education. The Defense Area Times is a special period in the history of Sichuan, which lasted 17 years. It began in the April of 1919 when Xiong Kewu formally claimed "the chart on defence areas for each group of the army in QingGuo of Sichuan" .Then the system of defense Areas became concrete one until in the beginning of 1935 the government of Sichuan united in due form. During the period ,the warlords of Sichuan got all of the powers in military, politics, finances, education of their own defence areas. The Military and government of each defence area depended on each other. In defense area ,the leader of army could control every thing , such as :the promotion of officers, the appoint and remove of local governor, the setting and remove of rules, the facilities of the government, the collection of taxes and so on . No matter it was the policy coming from the Central Government of state or from the government of Sichuan, it couldn't be carried out in the denfense area if the leader of local army didn't accept it. The warlords tyrannized and collected many taxes from common people, in order to own a bigger defense area, they had more than 400 fights. As a result, people here were forced to leave their home town, the villages became ruins. Under such condition, Sichuan's mass education still developed a litile by the efforts of every field, which established a certain basis for the development of fartherSichuan's mass education.The thesis has systematically analysed and discussed the origin of Sichuan's mass education, the reasons of the development, the facilities and the educational content of Sichuan's mass education in defense area times. So I have concluded the significance and characteristics of Sichuan's mass education in the period. In the first ascept ,1 have made a general statement about the development of Chinese mass education as well as the mass education in Sichuan, so that many inner parts of Sichuan's mass education in the period can be exposed. In the second ascept, I have discussed the reasons for the development of Sichuan's mass education in defense area times. There are many reasons to urge the development of Sichuan's mass education. The writer reasearched it from the following four aspects: the influence in educational ideas from the May 4 th new culture Movement, the practice of mass education carried out by some educated wise persons; the promotion in mass education from early Maxists and Chinese Communist Party; the support coming from some warlords. In third chapter, I have analysed the main facilities and content of Sichuan's mass education during the defense area times, including the role each institution of mass education played and the activeties they did. I also concluded the change and development of mass education in defense area times from the change of the numbers of institutions and funds. As to the main content of mass education, I have talked about educational purpose, methods in the following aspects, anti-illiteracy education, vocational education, the education in public health and entertainment. In the fourth part, I have made a conclusion about the characteristics and significance of mass education in the defense area times. I understand its characteristics from three parts: varied forms instability of development, the coexistence of good orginised in some areas and less than organized in the whole area. As to siginificance mass education not only riches the theory of education but also change the traditional concepts of education. The mass education in defense area times also enriched the content of Sichuan's educational history, as well as established the basis in material, thoughts and talented man for the further development of Sichuan's mass education.
