In the 1960's, the educationalist J-Schwab proposed the theory of Inquiry Learning. With this theory, the course reform movement in the USA was advanced and later the research learning gradually became a heated topic in the fields of educational theories and educational practice in each country. The term inquiry learning means a learning method aiming of cultivating the learners' initiative and creative abilities, that is, with the teachers' instructions, each learner select and determine a topic for his/her research from the phenomena in society or his/her life, then carries out the research task independently with the methods similar to scientific inquiry so as to acquire knowledge and resolve problems. It puts emphasis on beginning the task by the situation of questions. The aim is to improve the learners' receiving learning method, to promote the learners' learning desire, to cultivate the learners' initiative and practical abilities, to develop the learners' overall personality.With the furthering of quality education and starting of inquiry learning courses in china, the author did a eighteen-month-term study on inquiry learning on the subject of biology in senior high school. This article mainly sums up the real meaning and characteristics of inquiry learning, the methods and basic process of inquiry learning on the subject of biology in senior high school. And many samples of inquiry learning are available to explain the theory. The outcome of the author's research indicates that inquiry learning has many advantages and help to improvethe learners' comprehensive quality and examination records. During the course of the research, the author thinks that the receiving learning method should not be denied simply and completely. The author also finds that the theory of inquiry learning is not so perfect and some false ideas and shortcomings still exist. All these only can be perfected by all the teachers in their future research and practice.
