Because of the influence of the general educational circumstances, there exists a number of problems in spoken language teaching in China, especially the problem of isolation between educational theory and practice. The purpose of this thesis is to find a practical approach for spoken language teaching so as to resolve some of those problems. After an overview of the theories, principles, and models of Psycholinguistics, Cognitive linguistics and Sociolinguistics, we find their theories of speech production and second language acquisition can guide us to teach spoken language effectively. After reviewing the theoretical basis on speech production, we get the new ideas for improving spoken language teaching: comparing with written language teaching, spoken language teaching has its specialization. When teaching spoken language, we should follow the psychological and cognitive laws of speech production, push its social function forward, and lay stress on combination of theory and practice. Teachers should pay attention to relieving students' communicative stress, practise their spoken language ability in completing different tasks that should be graded and contextual. When accessing students' spoken language, teachers should utilize the task-based activities and pay attention to the information gap.The results of experiment support that the approach accords with the laws of spoken language teaching and the demands of the new age, and it is necessary and helpful to improve students' spoken language ability. Simultaneously, we should realize that various linguistic theories have their limitation. Teachers need to prove, create and manage to find better approach when combinating theory and practice.
