A good beginning for the junior school freshmen is the key to improve the teaching quality of the middle school. Having analyzed the students' typical difficulty ?reading and spelling in learning English, we try to put forward English teaching reform experiment in attempt to reform the various aspects ranging from teaching model, teaching organization and teaching assessment, etc. to discover a more effective and feasible way for ordinary junior school freshmen in west China.We select 103 junior school freshmen from Class 7 and 8 in No. 20Middle School as subjects. Then after 3months'English spelling and reading teaching, we compare this group with control group of 105 junior school freshmen from Class 3 and 5 who learn English by the traditional English teaching method.By using quantitative and qualitative research methods, we get the followings results : As far as the students are concerned, 1.their spelling and reading ability have been much improved. 2. their English comprehensive ability have been improved 3. their interest has been aroused and they gain confidence in learning English. 4.the students of average grade and those below raised their English to a new level, but it does little help to the first-rate students in their English study. Meanwhile we found that teachers' teaching views have been greatly changed, they start to involve in teaching reform and pay much attention to teaching strategy and the headmaster becomes more concerned about the teachers' training.According to the experiment process and results, we give some suggestions from the teaching process, teaching assessment, the teachers and the teaching management. 1.In terms of teaching: to reform the teaching method and attach importance to English spelling and reading; to create a situation and strengthen language input; to the arouse students' interest and stimulate students' motivations, etc. 2 In terms of the teaching assessment: to combine teachers assessment , teacher-student assessment and students self-assessment together; to use immediate assessment, etc.3.In terms of the teacher, to implement teacher's on-the-job training to change their teaching idea 4. In terms of teaching management: only when the school leaders support the teaching reform and each link of teaching is coordinated can the teaching reform be successful.
