It is an important portion of quality education to develop the operative ability in geography. In order to search for a feasible method to develop the students' operative ability, this thesis makes a penetrating analysis of the practical plight of geography education in middle schools.Four parts are encompassed in this thesis. The first two parts are devoted to the probe into some elementary theories, the third part lays emphasis on the analysis of the status quo, and the resolution to the plight is proposed in the last part.Part One: A brief analysis of the theoretical basis of the thought of activity education is conducted in this part. We can see an exposition of the thoughts of activity education in various periods and its development from the angle of education, and its theoretical basis is offered in respect with psychology.Part Two: This section eludicates the connotation of operative ability in geography. It also demonstrates the four essential abilities in geography, expounds the general features of practical activities and the developing process, and stresses the importance to reinforce the training of the geographical operative ability.Part Three: A all-round exposure is given on the plight in this part. It is based on the author's own feelings and experiences as a high school geography teacher. It is believed that only a deep and careful dissection from the respects of educational thoughts, management system, teacher resources and cultural mental stereotype can lead to an effective resolution to the problem.Part Four: The core of the thesis comes in the last part. In the light of long-year teaching experiences of geography, the author suggests a resolution to the plight. The resolution contains the seven aspects: 1). designing the curriculum; 2). compiling the teaching material; 3). changing teaching mode; 4). changing the concepts on textbooks; 5).model of training the basic operative ability; 6). optimizing the facility for practical activities; 7). examining and evaluating the operative ability. This resolution, including many instances closely integrated with the textbooks, goes deep into details and is endowed with a high practicality and operability.
