With sources gained from the research and practice in Chinese education,my own experience in educational practice and the achievement in relevant disciplines,beginning with the necessity lo cultivate students' oral communicative competence (OCC for short),this thesis teases out mulI i diiuensiona1ly such problems as the constituents of OCC,the history of oral language leaching in our nation and its present situation as well,the significance of fostering students' OCC and how to do it.Studying this topic is helpful to right ing some wrong or biased conceptions,adjusting Chinese education lo the needs of the society and students,not to mention facilitating the students" OCC in Chinese education.OCX' denotes the ability to exchange informal ion and emotions appropriately and resourcefully by speaking or' listening in the form of sound language accompanied by non linguistic means. OCC also implies the mastery of and familiarity with cultural assumptions and pragmatic rules. Linguistic means,non-linguistic means,cultural assumptions and pragmatic knowledge constitute the OCC of native Chinese language speakers.In history,the emphasis our nation's Chinese education attached to oral Chinese teaching had been unbalanced,yet on the whole,the teaching of oral Chinese was usually easily neglected .liver since the founding of the People's Republic of China,there has been great improvement in Chinese teaching ,in that Iistening and speaking are put together with reading and writing ,at least in theory ,as four fundamental Chinese linguistic skills. The 1990's sees even greater necessity to train students' OCC in Chinese education. As a result,OCC gained a legitimate place in the 2000 version Chinese (the subject in meaning) Educational Syllabus and textbooks. The change of notions,however,does not definitely bring about the advance of teaching practice itself,which calls for assiduous teamwork to solve the problems gradually.It is significant for Chinese education to foster students' OCC as it facilitates fulfilling the instrumental and humanistic goals of Chineseeducat ion,which in turn ensure student s good eapabi 1 it ies and qua 1 it,ies to draw upon when they enter the society.With students' ideal (XT as an end,there are such actions for us to take:i. bettering Chinese teachers' professional qualifications;ii. launching extracurricular and social practice activities;iii. stipulating more specific OCC goals;iv. making oral communicative teaching more effective;v. evaluating (XT of both teachers and students.Practical measures need to be taken in the hope of cultivating students' good oral communicative competence.
