On the basis of the equality cooperation with three teachers in a rural primary school in Ganzhou, Zhangye, Gansu, this research is carried out from the beginning of September, 2009 to the end of December, 2009. The study follows the basic norms and requirements of action research, which uses many specific methods synthetically, such as literature search, questionnaire, interview, analysis of practicality, observation and so on. The purpose of the study is to arouse teachers'awareness of reforming all aspects in homework, to improve the effectiveness of homework and to highlight the significance and values of homework in students'development through examining the problems existing in rural pupils'homework in design, layout, correcting, reviewing and so on. Thereby teachers can master the measures and methods of improving pupils'homework effectively and enhance their ability of making homework better, which will contribute to teachers'professional development.In this study, just for the series of problems arising in pupils'homework, researchers carry out the diverse and comprehensive exploration to the optimal design of homework by looking for a breakthrough of problems from the reality of teaching.By the feedback of students, parents, grade team leader later in the study period,this study has some of the the effect of action. The revelation of the research shows that: if we want to design rural pupils'homework optimal, firstly teachers design homework consciously; then various forms of homework are needed to be attempted to design; finally the optimal design of homework is considered as a whole. Teachers have to attempt, reflect and explore during the optimal design of homework, however, self- reflection is the basis. The action research of optimal design not only makes rural pupils'homework reflect its values, but also promotes teachers'professional development. The important cornerstone of the optimal design of homework and action research is broadening researchers'vision to carry out cooperation and exchanges among researchers. The optimal design of homework can improve pupils'various capabilities and enhance their development. The research recommends that : teachers had to seriously study the curriculum standards, understand the essentials before design homework.In optimal design homework action research, we must engage in more of the researchers thought to be inspired by the discussions and the exchange. Teachers should have the awareness and ability to optimal design of homework, to form good habits of continuous learning in teaching practice. The effective cooperation among teachers is also needed to explore the optimal design of homework to achieve the desired goals. The action research of education should be the main approach for rural teachers to carry out research.
