Textbooks are resources and tools for both students and teachers. They are the basis for achieving teaching objectives and effectiveness. After the publication of English Curriculum Standard of Vocational School, some of the vocational schools in Shanghai began to use new textbooks in 2009. In recent years, students in vocational schools have come from different parts of the country and they are different in English level, which is a challenge for English teachers to use textbooks creatively.This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One consists of the background, significance, methods, terms and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two is about the relevant researches on English teaching materials. It summarizes the researches on the evaluation of English teaching materials in this country and abroad.Chapter Three introduces the theoretical basis of textbook design, including principles, practice, requirements and material evaluation proposed in this thesis.Chapter Four analyzes the features and the overall structure of the textbook under investigation, including the arrangement of texts, exercise, teaching purposes and requirements and academic evaluation.Chapter Five is a case study with reference to the data collected from the teachers and students'questionnaires and interviews. Chapter Six is the summary of the thesis.In this thesis, the English textbook for vocational school is analyzed and evaluated according to English Curriculum Standard. Some problems of the textbook are discussed and some suggestions are made. It is the author's hope that this thesis will be a reference point in the improvement of the textbook.
