The present research is on the interest of Senior One English underachievers. The subjects of the research are Senior One students who are poor in English. They dislike English and are not given the appropriate teaching. Investigating the present situation and thinking up the best teaching designs, the author of this paper aims to help those underachievers to get interested in English and get good achievements through. The instruments of this research include classroom observations for the whole semester, questionnaire among 229 Senior One students, and interviews with some English underachievers and their teachers. Results from classroom observation, questionnaire and interviews indicate that, English underachievers are low interested in English learning which in a sense reveals the reason of their poor performance. It also has been found that they are much more interested in some topics closely related to their real-life and their preferable activities in spare time. Teachers should be responsible for such a status quo. Their inaccurate teaching ideas and inappropriate teaching methods pose this problem. Besides, based on these findings, the author offers some pedagogical suggestions of well-designed teaching plans. It is hoped that this research will be beneficial to future study on interest of underachievers and some effective teaching methods.In the first Chapter, the author gives an overall introduction about the research background and significance of the research, and presents research questions of this thesis.Chapter 2 is used for reviewing such related theories as definition and classification of interest, Herbart's many-sided of interest, Krashen's affective filter hypothesis, researches of underachievers and some other researches at home and abroad. Some readily available findings are also presented in this Chapter.In Chapter 3, the author elaborates the research methodology. It contains subjects, instruments, and research procedures. The data collected from questionnaire and interviews will be analyzed in Chapter 4.In Chapter 5, some countermeasures against the existing problem are put forth. Some pedagogical suggestions based on the research findings and New Curriculum Standard are posed.After discussion above, the whole conclusion is drawn in the last Chapter.
