Human history is a history of man's self-perfection. The thoughts of self-perfection and by-products from the course of self-perfection constitutes the main parts of human culture. However, people of different areas and different times hold different views on self-perfection, which can be seen from the basic conditions of their survival and life. Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are the 3 major sects which has all-round impact on China's culture. Interfusion of these three sects is the main idea of Chinese self-perfection: putting emphasis on enhancing the realm of life and promoting life growing through experiencing.Comparatively speaking, westerners' views about self-perfection vary through their history. During the ancient Greek era, self-perfection focuses on the general attribute of mankind. During the middle ages, self-perfection mainly means to keep with God's will. In recent capitalist societies, self-perfection emphasis on underlying man's potential. In modern capitalist societies, man's self perfection is a comprehensive resistance against man's desperation. By sorting out different ideas of self-perfection from different background, we can clearly see that, the basic condition of man's self-perfection is: man's self-discovery, self-recognition and self-perfection are inextricably related to their survival and life. Men, concrete and living human beings in life, are realizing their self-perfection through interactions with their surroundings. Practice of man's self-perfection will show some diversity based on different ages and areas, so it's hard to find static universal rules of self-perfection.For Chinese people, living in the transitional period, their self-perfection faces great challenge due to the special transitional age of China, especially due to the "travails" during modern crisis period and transition period. So, self-perfection of contemporary Chinese people should be aimed at living significantly, be based on human's free will, take life needs and interests as inner motive, and be realised through creative social practices.Through self-perfection, one can become a real man. In addition, one's self-perfection is valuable in different aspects in the definition, survival and progress of human being. So, man's self-perfection can be regarded as an ideal way of contemporary people's life existence. In the lifelong educational age, encouraging man's self-perfection is an inherent responsibility for school education. School education is undoubtedly the initial stage for man's self-perfection, which lays the ground for one's lifelong self-perfection. However, contemporary school education bears inherent deficiencies towards man's self-perfection: gap exists between contemporary school education's function of "cultivating people" and man's self-perfection; limit of school education in time and space does not make for man's self-perfection; school education is only an external factor for self-perfection; inherent drawbacks of contemporary school education also restrict man's self-perfection.Considering China's education situation, man's self-development will be hold down mainly on the following aspects:in terms of environment, self-perfection is divorced from real life situations; in terms of driving cause, initiative is lacking; in terms of content, integration of human is being decomposed continuously. Such phenomenon is the result of effects of Chinese cultural tradition and modernity. It's a sign of education's lacking of independence.According to the actual situation of China's education, based on the self-perfection of human beings, we put forward several advices on China's education reform as follows: take promoting man's self-perfection as the major target of school education; build curriculums centred on self-perfection; develop teaching links focused on self-perfection; take students as top priority, and reform teacher behaviors.
