Tutors in universities played a important role in the development of undergraduates and universities. When more and more students entered universities, tutors'work stress became more serious, some tutors have gotten job burnout. So it was necessary to investigate the state of work stress of tutors and its relationship with job burnout in order to find useful intervention methods handling with job stress and job burnout.The present paper reviewed the literature systematically, and made some pilot open-ended questionnaires, and consulted some experts. Then we constructed a preliminary questionnaire of work stress for tutors in universities. This tool was used to investigate 250 tutors from universities in Sichuan and Chongqing. Results of Factor analysis indicated that the seven-factor model fitted the data well. And it had a good reliability property. At the mean time, the Maslash Burn Out inventory-Educator Survey was also used in the present investigation. And the validity and reliability of this inventory were also acceptable. In fact, we tested the relationship between the work stress and job burnout of tutors from universities.At the conditions of the present study, the conclusions came as follows:1. The work stress questionnaire of Tutors form universities we developed had acceptable factor structure validity and reliability which could be used in other situations. The work stress of tutors in universities included work loadings, work fun, opportunity for development, research requirement, student management, press of educational level, and knowledge level.2. The Maslash Burn Out inventory-Educator Survey had acceptable validity and reliability.3. The level of work stress of tutors in universities located between 2 and 3 indicating it was not serious. The scores of seven factors of work stress of tutors in universities came as follows, from highest to lowest, work loadings, knowledge level, and opportunity for development, research requirement, student management, work fun, and press of educational level. The gender, state of marriage, type of university, and educational level had a significant impact on the work stress.4. The factors such as gender, age, state of marriage, type of university, and educational level had an insignificant impact on the job burnout of tutors sampled.5. The correlation between the work stress and job burn out was significant, r=0.48. And the work fun and work loading were the two main factors which predicted job burnout.
