Cooperative learning has been introduced into China since the early 1990s. Now it is still widely used in the classroom teaching and is thought of as an effective teaching theory and strategy system. It has been proved to be efficient in improving the classroom atmosphere, creating a new mode of relationship between teachers and students, reducing the anxiety in English learning and improving the students' academic achievements on a large scale. This paper firstly introduces the research background and significance of cooperative learning, followed by a literature review on its theories and learning modes home and abroad. Then the paper continues to explore some issues and problems in cooperative leaning from the perspective of students, teachers and social environment, with the hope of putting forward some feasible methods and principles to solve these problems. An experiment is also conducted to test the effectiveness of these methods and principles. The result of the experiment reveals that the first step to successful group work is to teach students some cooperative skills at the initial stage and then group students scientifically so that the grouping method can match the teaching contents and objectives. In the process of cooperative learning, the teacher should play the role of the monitor, choose the correct mode of learning, and encourage all the students to be actively involved in group work. When the cooperative task is over, the teacher should offer timely evaluation and feedback, paving the way for further cooperation. In conclusion, cooperative learning and group work can be a very useful instructional strategy when integrated effectively with other teaching methods and approaches. It is hoped that this paper will promote more relevant research in the relevant field by other teachers and scholars, so that the notions of cooperative learning will be further developed in both theory and practice.
