The participation of women is of great significance to the development of higher education. But there is still a big disparity between the women's status and the men's. Having reference materials, illustrating some data of female staff in universities and colleges in the 1990s, the thesis analyzes the status of female staff in Pakistan and Lao P.D.R. as well as the factors. The aim of this thesis is to arouse the attention to the gender problems in higher education, to encourage women to gain more relevant skills, and to improve the status of female staff in universities and colleges.It is composed of five parts:The first part introduces the meaning for this topic, the condition of domestic and overseas research in this field, the research method as well.The second part gives an global overview of the status of female staff in universities and colleges. With the help of a great deal of reference materials and data, the thesis gives out an overview of the status of female staff in universities and colleges on a worldwide scale.The third part analyzes the status of female staff in universities and colleges in Pakistan and Lao P.D.R. By analyzes their own economical and social background, the thesis show the status of female staff in universities and colleges in these two Asian developing countries.The fourth part analyzes the reasons for the weak situation of female staff in universities and colleges in the 1990s, including women themselves, the organizational structure, and the traditional culture.The fifth part proposes the strategies to improve the status, such as uprising women's overall quality, transforming the traditional culture, and redefining the organizational structures and policy- making.
