China has important effect in southeast Asian countries'integration because of political reasons and realistic interests. The effects show three aspects: leading role in political cooperation, interactive role in economy and trade exchanges, and enhancement in cooperation of security. At the beginning of 21st century, China has been rising at speed, while the development of ASEAN is also in a fast traffic lane. But there are many new problems to promote China's role in the ASEAN integration. Because of similar economy and trade structure, there is a great competition for the two sides in international trade and attracting foreign capital. Facing china's rapid rising, southeast Asian countries'wary has not been eliminated, so they pursued a strategic balance between great powers. The United States, Japan, India and other major countries are introduced to diminish China's influence in Southeast Asia. There are more subtle relations between China and ASEAN. Non-traditional security factors become more important in Sino-ASEAN relations, but the two sides lack necessary bilateral or multilateral cooperation arrangements and experiences. It is a challenge for both sides to deal with the non-traditional security threats. However, we should see that the new situation is an opportunity to China and ASEAN. It is helpful for keeping good trade cooperation in economy and trade field, for keeping the frequent high-level exchanges and mutual understanding on relevant issues. During this period, both sides pay more attention to the multilateral diplomacy for playing a more important role. Except for traditional security cooperation, nontraditional factors'importance is increased in the two sides′security cooperation. There is more wide and solid foundation in bilateral cooperation. In the 21st century, it is necessary to make greater efforts to deal with new challenges to develop Sino-ASEAN relations for both sides. First, China should take economy construction as the center of efforts, to upgrade economy restructuring, to improve the industrial structure, to enhance the country's economic competitiveness. Second, China should open up people diplomacy by promoting personnel exchanges at various levels to enhance mutual political trust between China and the ASEAN. Third, in non-traditional security field, two sides should establish institutionalized consultations as soon as possible, so as to deal with various challenges on time.
