Village autonomy is considered a great novelty of Chinese farmers in the construction of socialist democracy. China is going through rapid urbanization and this process has posed challenges and opportunities to villager self-government. The transformation of peasants into urban working immigrants, the industrialization of rural enterprises, the urbanization of rural communities as well as the diversification of social relations organizational forms, life styles and distribution forms in the countryside all have a tremendous impact on villager self-government. The trajectory of villager self-government is represented in the split of those who engage in villager self-government, the increase of non-farming population, the life style being transformed from one of being rural to one of being urban and the increasing modernization of the traditional ideas. These changes are particularly acute in areas where the rural areas interconnect with the cities, triggering flaring conflict and administrative chaos. As an basic cadre in the village, the author has got to realize the way to enhance the villager self-government by on-the-spot investigation, the new diversified forms of democracy in the practice of villager self-government serve as a new contribution to the development of socialist democracy. Villager self-government will shape the subject of democratic politics in countryside, change traditional politics and culture in countryside, positively influence democratic process in cities, and accelerate further reform in political system. In order to meet the need of urbanization, an organic law of villager self-government and an organic law of resident self-government should be introduced and promulgated so that the transition from rural community to urban community will be smooth and effective. It is also highly important for the villager committee to set up means to keep in touch with the transient population and those who have left the villages to work in the cities, and to help create go-agencies that can connect the migrant villagers with their home leaders so that they will not be left out of the exercise of villager self-government. For the process of China's rapid urbanization can paralyze villager self-government, all those who are involved should be perceptive and innovative, seeking patiently but effectively an orderly system that can integrate the two equally important processes and facilitate the progress of villager self-government.
