As the English journalist stationed in Beijing of "The Times" and the politicalconsultant of Bei-yang government of the Republic of China, Morrison has experiencedmany significant events in the late Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic ofChina, visited many places of China. Aftercoming to China in 1894, Morrison have forged a deep bond with China, and lived inChina for more than 20 years, so he is called "Morrison of Peking". In the eye ofMorrison, China has beautiful landscapes and rich natural resources, but is still a typicaltraditional agricultural society, the ordinary people in this society are in extreme povertywhich makes Morrison feel deeply shocked. In the aspect of Chinese humanisticenvironment, Morrison carefully inspects folk customs, religious beliefs, and nationalcharacters of China, especially researches seriously on problems such as opium,missionaries and so on, and understands Chinese and the characteristics of Chinesesociety from China's own perspective. In the aspect of social system, Morrison studiesthe status of women, family relationships, and political system and so on in thetraditional social system, and exposes its corruption and backwardness. At the sametime, Morrison is paying more attentions to the reformations in various aspects of theChinese society, and full of hope to China's future.The fields of vision which Morrison observes China from are multicultural: thestandpoint of colonialism and imperialism is the starting point of Morrison'sunderstanding to China; the modern western civilization is the reference of Morrison'sunderstanding of China; it is a prominent feature of the Morrison's view of China fromChinese people's concepts or on China's standpoint to observe and understand China.From these multiple perspectives, Morrison shows to people a colorful, complex andchangeable China.
