A Study Of The Morrison Administration’s China Policy

Since the beginning of the 21st century,the relationship between China and Australia has been developing continuously.However,when the Morrison government came into power,the situation changed greatly.The strategic competition among great powers in the Indo-Pacific region intensified.Australia’s domestic politics has also undergone drastic changes.The pro-American Morrison came to power.Although the economic relations and cultural exchanges between China and Australia have reached a new level,the Morrison government has taken a hostile attitude to interfere with the normal exchanges between China and Australia.They closely followed the US policy of containing China in terms of security,and undermined the normal economic and cultural exchanges between China and Australia many times.There are many factors influencing the Morrison government’s China policy orientation.Firstly,the international strategic competition between China and the United States intensifies,and Australia,as a staunch ally of the United States,is bound to be affected by the United States’ policy toward China.The "hawkish" figures holding the power core in Australia,the inherent strategic culture of insecurity,the rising public dissatisfaction with China and the wrong propaganda of right-leaning media all influence the Morrison government’s tendency towards China policy.All kinds of unfriendly actions of the Morrison government towards China have seriously interfered with the smooth operation of China-Australia relations,and also caused serious disturbance to the stability of the Indo-Pacific region.Meanwhile,the neglect of right-leaning media and think tanks during the Morrison administration has left a lot of negative legacy for the new Albanese government to improve China-Australia relations.A stable China-Australia relationship is extremely beneficial to both sides,but there is no conflict of fundamental interests between Australia and China.China still needs to actively win over Australia.China should constantly promote security exchanges and dialogue between the two countries,close economic ties and people-to-people exchanges,and strengthen its own strength to promote the continuous development of China-Australia relations.
