Tibet is located at the southwest frontier of China, with a unique natural environment and historical conditions, having a rich natural resources. It 's an important door and4strategic place of China. It's also an golden area with a broad prospect of development. After the peaceful liberation of Tibet and since the opening up and reform policy carrying out ,with the help of all the people of China and the caring of central government ,the economic and other aspects of Tibet have made rapid progress, especially the infrastructure has made a huge change .But given the limitations of all sides, the general traffic and transportation situation is still very underdeveloped, compared with that of the other part of China ,there are still a lot of problems existed.With the "developing the west strategy" being put in practice ,quickening the pace of transportation construction and supply a comfortable and convenient traffic to the Tibet people not only has close connection with the economic and social development of Tibet, but also is the key problem to the stability of the whole country.This article gives a brief introduction of the situation of Tibet autonomous region and makes a particular analysis about its current situation of economic and social development directions. It reports the problems that exist in highway, civil aviation and pipelines. It also gives an evaluation of the current traffic and transportation system of Tibet. Using the combinative way of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, it makes a forecast about the transport capacity of 2005 and 2010.Accoding to the result ,it puts forward the guideline ,basic principle ,overall arrangement and strategic emphasis of the traffic and transportation system of Tibet ,it also establishes a frame of traffic construction. In the end ,it gives some suggestions that maybe is helpful to the policy makers.
