The figure painter in Southern Qi Dynasty, Xiehe, inherited Gu kaizhi's view of "soul communication", further expanded and promoted Gu's painting theory spirit, and for the first time proposed the painting standard "vivid charm" which is called "six principles" by later generation. It has the following contents:"There are six principle for painting, and it's hard for painters to be perfect in all the six principles. Since ancient times, most painters can only do their best in one of the six principles. What's the demand of six principles? Firstly, vivid charm; secondly, structural using of the brush, thirdly, depict according to the characteristics of the object appearance.fourthly, different kinds with different colors; fifthly, positioning of the landscape and sixthly, write-shift mode." Xiehe's six principles has a profound impact on the aesthetics of traditional Chinese painting, and also has an important influence on the skills of Chinese tradtional painting. It has become an important theoretic painting stardard for evaluating Chinese traditional paintings and has also turned into an important creation method.I have reasons to believe that Zhoufang followed the six principles in his traditional Chinese paintings of beautiful women. The six principles has played an important role in the colour formation of Zhou's paintings.
