Vagueness is one of language attributes. The vague language emerges vague as its non-determinacy is applied in oral or written communication. Since Zadeh put forward the concept of"Fuzzy Set", many scholars have attached an importance to vague language and its translation. In communication, people often make use of language's non-determinacy to enhance expressive effects and avoid negative results to be caused by precise language. The purpose of using vague language is not to make the hearer feel puzzled. Instead, it aims to obtain better expressions effects.Vagueness is a kind of language phenomenon. It occurs by the name of the scope of semantic vagueness in grammar, hedges and so on. This paper mainly analyzes the uncertain semantic scopes produced by undefined connotation and denotation. In other words, the diplomat deliberately uses vague language such as euphemism, metaphor or evades answering questions to achieve the communicative purpose, which transforms information tactfully to avoid misunderstanding and embarrassment. Therefore, using vague language properly does not lessen the correctness of the diplomatic language. On the contrary, it will enhance the expressive effects in some sense and achieve the diplomatic purposes. As diplomacy is a kind of action with special purposes, the communicative purpose determines the contents and forms of communication. On the basis of skopos theory, this paper applies three rules of skopos theory (intratextual coherence, intertextual coherence and skopos rule) and three common methods of translation (vagueness for precision, precision for vagueness and vagueness for vagueness) to explaining and analyzing the translation of vagueness in the diplomatic language. Therefore, the translator should pay much attention to the vagueness in the diplomatic language, and choose relevant rules and translation methods according to the special communicative purpose in the diplomatic activities.
