With the further development of China’s reform and opening-up, especially afterChina joined into the world trade organization, China has been embracing anunparalleled time of booming foreign exchanges. As the bridge of communication, therole of interpreter has become more and more important. Whether the diplomaticinterpretation successful or not is concerned with the image of our country and dignityof our nation, therefore diplomatic interpretation is a very important branch ofinterpretation field.Using vague language is inevitable in our daily life, it can help people achievecommunicative purpose and keep harmonious relationship. Considering variouselements, statesperson or diplomats will use vague language in diplomatic activities.In real practice, an interpreter will find it hard or even impossible to be always faithfulto the speaker for there are many vague expressions in diplomatic context. Therefore,the so-call equivalence is no longer valid in some practice. A good interpretation isdepended on whether the interpreted version has achieved the purpose ofcommunication in specific context. This paper attempts to discuss how to chooseinterpretation strategies within the framework of skopos theoryRelevant studies in the past mainly focused on the systematic analysis ofdiplomatic interpretation or application of skopos theory to film script translation orvague language interpretation under the guidance of relevance theory and receptiontheory but failed to pay enough attention to the interpretation of vagueness under theguidance of skopos theory. Therefore this paper attempts to enrich the research ofvague language interpretation to some extent, and also can provide more usefulstrategies in diplomatic interpretation practice.This thesis consists of three parts: an introduction, the main body and aconclusion. Its main contents are as follows:The first part is introduction, which mainly introduces the background,meaningand aim of the essay.The second part is the main body, which is made up of three chapters:Chapter One mainly serves as a literature review, which includes the definition ofvagueness and review of the research on vagueness from home and abroad, and introduces skopos theory, which is the framework of this paper. Besides that, itintroduces the basic concepts of skopos theory, which includes aim, purpose, functionand intention. Last but not the least, it introduces three basic rules of skopos theroy,which includes the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.Chapter Two mainly concentrates on vagueness in diplomatic context, whichincludes cause of vague language, reasons for vagueness in diplomatic context andways of expressing vagueness in diplomatic contextChapter Three focuses on the interpreting of vagueness in diplomatic contextunder the guidance of skopos theory, and this part mainly analyzes examplesaccording to three different rules which includes the skopos rule, the coherence ruleand the fidelity rule and give respective interpreting strategies.The last part is conclusion, which makes a summary to the previous part, andpoints out that skopos theroy can help interpreter get rid of bond of traditionaltranslation theories and enjoy more freedom and it can help interpreters appropriatelyinterprets vagueness in diplomatic context. Interpreters should choose interpretingstrategies according to different rules, aims and cirmustances.
