My research is focused on the literary consumption- prone under the influence of mass media. Since 1990, China has transformed itself from a production-based society to a consumption- oriented society. In such social situation, the rise of the mass media promotes and facilitates the fully deepening of literary consumption. Thus,"Consumption"is a critical project which is needed to be studied in the current contemporary literature's status. My thesis is divided to 4 parts to analyze the relationship between the production and consumption, the causes of literary consumption-prone, the consumption's characters and significance. The study of literary consumption-prone has an important significance for exploring the present situation of Chinese literature, the future development trend of Chinese literature, and building a harmonious and healthy media environment for Chinese literature. This paper is divided into four chapters:Chapter I: Using the Marx's"theory of artistic production", the literature's production and consumption was studied, including 1) literary production offering objects for literary consumption, 2) literary production regulating the ways for literary consumption and 3) literary production resulting in both consumption's need and new literary consumers.Chapter II: The reasons for literary consumption-prone were explored including 1) the media's industrial development in which the reform of the Chinese media's industrialization stimulates the literary consumption, 2) the powerful"right of speak", via which mass media makes the literary"hot spots"and manipulates the literary criticism and consequently leads the deepening of literary consumption, and 3) the diversity of media's communication ways which promotes the literary consumption.Chapter III: The consumptive features of literatures, as a"commodity", including 1)symbolic feature, 2)entertainment and 3) packaging.Chapter IV: Advantages and disadvantages of literature caused by the mass media's development, a leading force in consumption ideology, in the context of the social transformation. Further, some suggestions by author for this issue are described in this thesis. |
