Ingmar Bergman(1918—2007)is Sweden's most famous film director and overall one of the world's most important filmmakers in twenty century. His fame rests upon a large production of remarkable quality throughout a career of almost sixty years. In this thesis, based on the auteur theory I study his three typical films——the Silence(1963), Persona(1966) and the Cries and Whispers(1972). These three films exhibit the deep-seated difficulties in communication and the tension between language and silence. In this thesis, we primarily use the psychoanalysis of Lacan, such as self-awareness and inter-subjectivity, to analyze the relationship of characters. The language which badger with the desire of subject can not be trusted. We thus try to interpret the complex emotion of the characters via the motion and countenance. In addition, we analyze the metaphors of recurrent features relevant to subject matter from the point of view of semiotics, and pay attention to the cinematography which was studied by few people.Overall, Bergman's attitude to communication is pessimistic and we have to admit that angelic communication does not exist at all. The only way for us to verify the establishment of communication is the coordination of subsequent actions, but not the silence or language. More importantly, we need to learn to respect others in communication.
