This thesis aims at approaching the image of teachers in Modern Chinese fiction from the cultural perspective and exploring the characteristics of them as cultural disseminators. On the one hand, teachers are a typical group experiencing the confrontation of cultures. The culture they have to teach and the culture they personally identify with, the culture they have to teach and the culture they personally act with, the culture they personally act with and the discursive familial and social culture at large are oftentimes at odds with each other. These conflicts cause them emotional and intellectual plight from time to time. On the other hand, as disseminators of cultures, some of them are bound by traditional Chinese culture, some follow western culture and some travel between the two. Their cultural propensity not only influences their mindset and behavior but also causes reaction from their families and the society. Furthermore, by analyzing the image of teachers in Modern Chinese fiction from the cultural perspective I mean to bring the issue of education in contemporary China to the fore for discussion. The thesis consists of three chapters. In the Chapter one, I will delineate the relationship between the teacher and the culture from late Qing Dynasty to establishment of the Communist regime both chronologically and synchronously. Chapter two is to do case studies to fathom the factors behind traditional Chinese culture and western culture that determine the archetypes of teachers in Modern Chinese fiction. Chapter three is to reflect on the circumstances of contemporary Chinese education and teachers and thus to explore the relationship between the teacher and the culture in contemporary China. |
