Du Fu's poems occupied an important position in Tang Poems. They not only had high artistic value but also retained many firsthand data about social culture in the Tang Dynasty, among which there were a lot of descriptions of the culture of the Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). By taking Du Fu's poems involving medicine and pharmacology as the research objects, this article analyzed and sorted out the related data and information. It also described the connection between medicine and himself, explained the value of TCM for him and showed his tough experiences as well as his noble ideas when composing poems during his travelling and drifting. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to explore the value of medicine and pharmacology on the poet's life and idea.This article analyzed the primary conditions of Du Fu's poems and the research of TCM and pharmacology according to his social and cultural background and environments. It also studied the close relationship between Du Fu's poems and TCM; classified his poems into two kinds. The first was involved in cases and diseases; the second was about the medicinal herbs which he himself picked, grew and used all his life. His 95 poems were divided into three types: cases, medicinal herbs and health. His poems had rich contents of TCM and pharmacology, which reflected the variety and extensive themes.Du Fu's poems represented people's popular medicated diet. Medicinal herbs were very important to the meaning of Du Fu's life in keeping healthy, drug selling, entertainment and helping others. For Du Fu, medicinal herbs were not only necessity but also things used to help others.This article provided an important means of researching Du Fu's life and thoughts in the terms of medicine and pharmacology.
