Abstract/Summary:
In this paper, we make the continuous aspect markers of Zhuji dialect '[lei][kh(?)]','[lei][kh(?)]','[k(?)][kh(?)]','[l(?)][kh(?)]','[t(?)hi][kh(?)]','[t(?)hi][kh(?)]','[kh(?)]','[kh(?)]' for the study. We think suffix words such as '[lei][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' and the others have dual functions as continuous aspect markers and far or near distance markers, morpheme '[kh(?)]' represents near distance marker, morpheme'[kh(?)]' represents far distance marker. This paper aims to delineate and explain the dual functions of this sort.First, we describe the character and meaning of sentences containing '[lei][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' etc. which denote continuing activity. We argue '[lei][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' reflects a dynamic continuing status;'[l(?)][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' describes a transition process from an action to a static continuing status;'[t(?)hi][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' means a static continuing status; and '[kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' can be a substitute for both'[l(?)][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' and '[t(?)hi][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' in terms of grammar usage. Second, we describe the usage pattern of '[lei][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' etc. as far or near distance markers, and argue that the usage of far or near distance markers are related to the space, time, and person in sentences, the distance of which determine the choice of far or near distance markers. We then conclude that '[lei][kh(?)]/[kh(?)]' etc. have undergone a process of double metaphor to form the dual functions as both continuous aspect and far or near distance markers. Finally, we compare the features of Zhuji dialect with those of other similar dialects. We find that the phenomenon of markers denoting both continuous aspect and far or near distance occur in many other dialects, and the pattern mentioned above also apply to those dialects. Therefore, the phenomenon of markers denoting both continuous aspect and far or near distance is prevalent among many dialects and deserve a further research.
