Beicun, comparing to his contemporary counterparts, has something unique in his work. After his submission to religion, he expresses his thinking of value and meaning of life through his works. In his works,he dissects the unbearable deadweight of life and lets the figures in his works fall into the unsaved dilemma gradually. As a result, they have to choose either to commit suicide to fight against the meaninglessness and pain in life, or to submit to religion to take their refuge. This paper focuses mainly on the death consciousness in Beicun's works and aims to analyze the survival condition of figures in his works and their choices between death and faith and finally approach the meaning of Beicun's life-care writing and the influence of this kind of writing on contemporary Chinese literature. This paper can be divided into three parts:the introduction, the text and the conclusion. The introduction is mainly a review of the domestic research on Beicun's works, and it also discusses the reason of choosing death consciousness as well as the technique and writing plot of this paper. The first section of the text mainly discusses the origin of death consciousness in Beicun's works through three aspects: the social condition Beicun lives in, the contemporary western influences and his own experiences and understanding of his submission of religion. The second section mainly discusses the reaction and choices of figures in his works when they confront the dilemma so as to expose the different expression of death consciousness. Through the analysis of fame and fortune, emotion, art and faith of religion, this section depicts Beicun's idea that the present materialized world and survival is actually against the human living and the faith of God is the only meaning of life. The third section mainly discusses the ways death consciousness express itself in Beicun's works and also reveals the abstract narrative used by Beicun by analyzing the narrative perspective, narrative language and narrative technique in his works. Moreover, this section also discusses the symbolic metaphor of death used by Beicun to express his understanding of hardship and meaning of human survival. The conclusion mainly discusses some shortcomings in Beicun's writing and explains the importance of the ultimate concern in Beicun's works to contemporary Chinese literature.
