Projection language has attracted more and more attention of researchers. The frequent appearance of projection in the text is the primary means to achieve discourse language accuracy, objectivity, and formality and so on. The features of news discourse language determine that the projection in the news discourse plays an important role, which is to enhance the objectivity and formality of discourse. Therefore the phenomenon of projection in news discourse has great significance. This thesis bases on the theory of metafunctions in systemic-Functional linguistics (SFL) and makes some comparative analysis of locution projections, idea projections, parataxis, and hypotaxis in English news discourse and English fiction, from ideational, interpersonal, and textual perspective. Then according to the distributions of the projection clause complex and the projecting verbs, the main features of projections in news discourse are concluded. The thesis adopts qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the main features of news discourses and focuses its discussion on projections in news discourse corpus (about 300,000words) and fiction corpus (about 300,000 words) on the basis of metafunctions in Systemic-Functional linguistics. Statistics are collected and compared in this part. Combining the features and the purposes of news discourse, the projection phenomenon is discussed. Then it is found that a large amount of projections do exist in news discourse. The application of projection can help news discourses realize their purposes of objectivity and impartiality. In addition, this thesis concludes the application of clause complexes and projecting verbs in news discourse and fiction. A fundamental analysis and explanation of the relationship between text structures and genre are made. That is to say, genre restrains discourse structures and genre style also builds the text structure. This study takes the metafunctions of Systemic-Functional Grammar as theoretical framework for discourse analysis and discloses the features of projection, which will offer some help for news writer.
