The Application Of Cooperative Learning To Intensive English Course

Cooperative learning, an effective and important teaching method, has been widely used in many different areas of teaching for years, especially in English. More and more English teachers are aware of its positive effect in stimulating the interests of students and the enhancement of the spirit of team work.The introduction of Cooperative learning to Intensive English Course for English majors is not a new idea, yet the application of it is absolutely far from enough. The author believes that the application of this teaching approach can change the vicious cycle of Intensive English teaching, which pays too much attention to the explanation of vocabulary and grammar.In the first part of the paper, the author introduces the definition of relevant concepts as Cooperative Learning, Intensive Course and English Teaching and analyzes the theoretical basis of cooperative learning, namely Social Interdependence Theory, Cognitive Elaboration Theory and Constructive Theory.In the second and third part, the author observes the current situation of Intensive course teaching in College and finds out that despite of the fact that both teachers and students have already realized the importance of Intensive course, they still feel tired of this boring and tiring course, which involves so much grammar, vocabulary and text appreciation. Then the author takes her own teaching experiences as examples to elaborate the effect of Cooperative Teaching in Intensive Course. According to the investigation by questionnaire, problems in the course of Cooperative teaching are analyzed.At last, suggestions are given to improve the efficiency of cooperative learning application to Intensive English teaching.
