Dummy verb, as one of the many kinds of verbs in Contemporary Chinese Language, possesses many exclusive features of its own. Although dummy verbs has a limited quantity, they are frequently used, among which are"进行","加以","予以","给以","给予"and so forth. Based on previous studies and a large number of practical language corpora, the article under discussion explores the syntactic features, syntactic functions and conditions of use of dummy verbs. Meanwhile, it carries out a profound semantic, syntactic, pragmatic analysis on the three typical dummy verb examples"进行","加以"and"予以".The first chapter of the article summarizes the preceding academic research on dummy verbs. Nevertheless, it focuses on an explanation of the treatment of the scope, class and disputed areas of the chosen dummy verbs in the article. Starting with the fundamental features of dummy verbs, the author sets out to re-describe dummy verbs, using large-scale corpus of frequently-used dummy verbs as research data.As a result, the author is able to draw a xouple of main differences bewteen dummy verbs and common verbs. The third chapter contains an analysis on the syntactic and functional features of the dummy verbs. Focusing on the aspects like stem, prefix and follow-up component of dummy verbs, the article provides a comparatively profound summary of the syntactic features of dummy verbs. It offers an analysis on the syntactic function of dummy verbs, which turns a predicate head from "unbounded" to "bounded" and a sentence from "non - qualified "to" qualified".The fourth chapter mainly discusses the conditions of use of the dummy verbs. It focuses on a discussion about the differences and similarities in sentence types and semantic conditions shown by the DVa and DVb dummy verbs. The fifth chapter emphasizes a three-dimensional exploration of the differences and similarities of usages of the three typical dummy verbs"进行","加以"and"予以".The six chapter serves as a brief summary. It concludes the research process and results of the paper.
