A vision, which incorporated modern graphic methods with remarkable inventiveness and obvious form,is always reflected by Joseph Koudelka's works as a long evolution of his vision from the external to the inherent and ultimate nature of his subjects. It is a question of choosing the essential in order to achieve the most dramatic presence. On the surface, the stage photographs from the Divadlo Za Branou (Theater Beyond the Gate) have nothing in common with the tragically realistic images of the invasion of Prague—except, perhaps, for a flagrant theatricality. Those gypsies, so intimately explored, would be entirely out of place in cities devastated by war, or in the region of the Black Triangle, which has been turned to desert by pollution. Yet there is a trace of continuity in his intention. Exile elevates Koudelka's personal experience to a more broadly applicable statement. More than descriptiveness, what is important here is the overall tenor of the photographs, in which human beings search in vain for their place, as if looking into themselves with some sort of inner vision. The main period of time according to this thesis is from 1961 to 1970. It comments on the work experience in the Theater On the Balustrade and the Theater Beyond the Gate with the rules and principles of drama which are always tied up to the social-economic and political situation of the very period. The research areas are as follows:First, expand the backdrop of the history of drama in Czech.Second, turn the highlight to the historical achievement that Joseph Koudelka has made when he was immersing in the atmosphere of theatre.Third, analysis will be made in the subjects that hade been chosen by Joseph Koudelka and the significant meaning that stand for definitely.
