Research On "Haole" As A Post-positioned Modal Tag

This thesis takes a study on"haole"which is considered as a post-positionedmodal tag. Based on the study and research work on the system of Chinese modalparticle, this thesis integrates"haole"to the category of the post-positioned markmodal particles and conducts a detailed description and analysis on the types ofsyntactic structure and the semantic classes of sentences that"haole"appears, as wellas on its function of discourse tag and feature of interrelation function. The thesis alsoprovides a reasonable explanation on the process of its grammaticalization.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction. Itsummarizes former achievements on"haole"and raises the content and goal of thisthesis.Chapter two categorizes and describes the modal meaning and semantic class of"haole"as a post-positioned modal tag. It draws out the core meaning of"haole"andthe semantic background that"haole"appears, thus establishes the system of its modalmeaning.Chapter three studies the meaning-expression function, discourse function,discourse tag function, and interrelation tag function of"haole"that appears at the endof a sentence in the angle of functionalism.Chapter four explores the origin and evolvement of"haole"as a post-positionedmodal tag, studies its gramaticalization in the diachronic and synchronic angles, andprovides an explanation on its course of gramaticalization. It concludes that"haole"asa modal tag evolves from"haole"as a discourse tag in oral Chinese, which derivesfrom the VRC pattern"V+ hao+le"and predictive"haole"after twice analysis andanalog.Chapter five is the conclusion and miscellaneous. It draws a conclusion on themain object and contents of this study, indicates the value of the research and probableinnovation. The miscellaneous introduces the field that this thesis doesn't reach andsets a basement for further study.
