| In this paper, the author will, from both grammatical and syntactic perspectives and by means of exemplification and explanation, conduct a both synchronic and diachronic research into the "Verb +chu" Structure based on the theories of structuralism, grammaticalization and cognitive linguistics. It will also deal with other relevant issues like:Firstly, build upon relevant research hitherto, the author will delve more into the grammatical meaning of directive complements like chu. The author believes that, in terms of structural standard, cong...li/zhong/xia/shang wangwai VP and cong...li/zhong/xia/shang VP dao waimian are obviously indicative of direction and result. And in terms of grammatical meaning, the author categorizes the direction-indicating function of the complement chu into concrete direction and abstract direction and its result-indicating function into quantitative and qualitative.Secondly, the author analyses the syntactic and semantic features of "verb + chu" and sub-categorizes it into singular "verb + chu" and dual "verb + chu", "verb + chu1 (spontaneous displacement)", "verb + chu2 (artificial displacement)" and "verb + chu3(concomitant displacement)" with respective discussion of the semantic features of the latter three.Thirdly, the author describes the collocative and semantic features of "verb + chu" as an marker of a progressive action and gives a comparative analysis with the typical marker of progressive action "V+cheng". The result of the study showes the non-typical progressive action marker "V+chu" has strong collocation ability. It can be collocated with zhicheng chengshi, renxuan chengshi, xingcheng chengshi and zicheng chengshi, but in those four collocation structures,"chu" is always not a compellent grammatical marker.Fourthly, the author reviews the history of the directive complement chu. Diachronically, it was in the period of Eastern Han Dynasty that the "verb + chu" Structure started to be used as a "VC" grammatical unit. And it was not until the periods of the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties that its result-indicating function matured. As for the quantitative and qualitative result-indicating functions, they both were initiated in Eastern Han Dynasty and matured in Tang Dynasty. As for the grammaticalization cause, the grammaticalization of "V+chu" is the result of common function from the two causes of metaphor and reanalysis which is as the same as most of the directive complement structures. Metaphor results in changing meaning from content to gramative, from concret to abstract of "V+chu". Reanalysis results in the structural changing from continuous action to a structer of "VC". |
