Many European artists focus on and display the stories and legends of France national heroine Jeanne d'Arc, which plays an important role in literature and art. So there are many images about Jeanne d'Arc in western literature and art history. We can see Jeanne d'Arc story in many ways, such as historical records, paintings, dramas, novels and movies. All of these works not only show the unique charm of literature, but also provide vivid and rich materials for us to research the social culture and ideology of that time.In the works of different times, different nationalities and different countries, the images of Jeanne d'Arc, show different characteristics, such as in W.William Shakespeare's, Schiller's, Mark Twain's and George Bernard Shaw's. Those images also reflect different ideological tendency and aesthetic implication. Jeanne d'Arc was first treated as a witch or religious heresy by people, then she became a Joan of Arc and heroine. This positive image was stereotyped in western literature and became one of indispensable female image in western literature. This paper will list the images of Jeanne d'Arc in different ages and different works by analyzing them with the thematologie, imagologie, feminist to show the male writers and the male awareness in their works. By analyzing those images, the paper will lead us to deeply think the image of Jeanne d'Arc. From the demonized and shameless slut with mysterious sorcery in Shakespeare's work to the perfect nymph in Mark Twain's works, then to the Joan of Arc in George Bernard Shaw's works, the images of Jeanne d'Arc greatly enrich the narration of literature. The images of Jeanne d'Arc show psychological orbit of people from different ages and nationalities in the process of image changing from negative to positive then to independent. We can see the changing process of women's status from renaissance by the images of Jeanne d'Arc.The paper has four parts. The first part is an introduction. The second part is the evolution process of the image of Jeanne d'Arc in history and literature. The third part is the image of Jeanne d'Arc in the view of comparative literature imagologie. The forth part is to interprete the image of Jeanne d'Arc from the view of fiminism. It also explains the changing process of women's status by interpreting the image of Jeanne d'Arc. This paper will draw a clear line of the changing process of Jeanne d'Arc in western literature by reading the novels intensively. By reading the novels intensively and referencing many historical datas, the paper also analyzes the close connection between the stories of Jeanne d'Arc and the age and the society by exploring the complex reasons of Jeanne d'Arc from a witch to a Joan of Arc. The writers from different ages treat the story differently. By analyzing these differences, we will know the male writers'mentality, intention and position toward female. We can also know the influences which are caused by times changing to figuers and stories. I hope that this paper will help us to have a clear cognition to the changing process of Jeanne d'Arc in western literature. I also hope that we have an deeply understanding to the image of Jeanne d'Arc.
