Nominal adverbial is an especial grammatical phenomenon in Modern Chinese language. This dissertation aims to do study on this phenomenon. This disquisition which using method of combination of syntax form, semantic description, and pragmatic, cognitive interpretation to research the phenomenon of nominal adverbial. Firstly, the syntax of NV structure is clarified, then the semantic analysis, at last a interpretation is given form the pragmatics and cognition. This disquisition mainly includes six parts as follows:Part One: the syntax analysis of NV structure. In this part, the NV phrases are clarified into three kinds by the criterion of whether the preposition can be omitted. The first kind is the phrases with of without prepositions .The second without prepositions, and the third with prepositions. Among them, the third kind is discussed with emphasis.Part Two: the semantic analysis of NV structure. At the beginning, the semantic type are divided into six types. Moreover, there are indefinite component in these NP from the semantic character. After that, I do further analysis on the semantic part of NP which is in the third kind of NV phrases. Besides, in the author's view, there happens a replacement of the semantic part on NP in the third kind of phrase, in which preposition is the main reason.Part Three: the pragmatic analysis of NV structure. When the first kind of NV phrases is not omitted, the NP is salient. However, the whole phrase is salient when there is a NV phrase in the sentence. In the usage of omitting, both the omitted preposition in NV structure and other relative words are affected by the same context of words and given the information, and the omitted preposition of the second kind phrases is also affected by the stability of fixed phrase. Besides, the presentation of NV structure embodies intensive colloquialism.Part Four: the cognitive analysis of NV structure. On the one hand, the phenomenon of NV structure is the results of economical principle in verbal communication. On the other hand, it is the representation of character of Chinese parataxis. But these two principles should not be used in the third kind of phrases.Part Five: the diachrony and synchrony of NV structure. This paper, gives research on the phenomenon of NV structure in Ancient Chinese and other languages in order to find their commonness in Modern Chinese language comparing with NV structure, and discusses the effect which they affect the development of NV structure in Modern Chinese. Among this part, the nominal adverbial in English and Japanese are given as examples.Part Six: other conditions of NV structure. This part is the complement of analysis to the third kind of phrases. It is mainly expound from three aspects: syllabic features, the condition when NP become adverbial, and the bound adverbial VP.
