Lin Lanxiang is an important turning point between Jin Ping Mei and Dream of Red Mansions. It is a novel long-neglected and even unknown. However, it has values in many aspects and plays an important role in the history of novel. It is even an important milestone works in the history of the temporal panorama novel and Chinese ancient novel.Researchers pay much attention to the ideological connotation and artistic achievement. Although their works can inspire people, most of them are individual analysis. This is not enough for the important novel—Lin Lanxiang. The thesis starts with the present developing condition of novel, the style of the times reflected by the novel and the content of the temporal panorama novel. etc. It explores the influence produced by the novels of Yuan Dynasty, the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty on the Lin Lanxiang's main idea and art style. The author tries to reveal the keynote and implication through deep exploration of its main idea and art style: firstly, the novel promotes women's moral, and reveals the unreasonable reality that women's moral and ability were suppressed and ridiculed by feudal system. Secondly, it challenges feudal ethics—men are superior to women. Tragedies in the novel are quite different from most of Chinese love tragedies. The tragedy begins when the lovers get married, but not the interference with the pure love. It makes people doubtful about the sacred and pure love, and even feudal ethics. Thirdly, it appeals the return of human nature. The principles of"The three cardinal guides and five constant virtues"and"The three obedience and four virtues"cause psychological defense to love. Natural loves are humble. The author believes that she should express her mental love but not indulge in physical love—she distorts the nature of kind-hearted and frank, and ultimately becomes a victim of feudal ethics. At the same time, by exploring the same–sex love between wife and concubine, the novel reflects the women's disasters caused by the inequality between men and women—share a husband for keeping friendship of sisters. Moreover, through the exploration of special application of narrative approach and skilled control of elegant language, the novel criticizes defects in the end of feudal society, and reflects the thought—life is a dream. The author makes effects to reveal the sense of tragedy hiding under the world-human novels—women lose their independent personality with the principles of"The three cardinal guides and five constant virtues"and"The three obedience and four virtues". They obey these dead and corrupt principles and some even sacrifice to the backward principles. Men's rights are the core of Chinese families. Women have no social rights and status at all in this culture of asphyxiating atmosphere. Their only value lies in the appendage of men. The novel laments and cries for the tragedies of women. Its ideological significance is much more important than its content. The thesis makes small contribution to the study on female images in Chinese Literature. However, by exploring the ideological connotation and artistic characteristic of the novel—Lin Lanxiang, we try to make a little inspiration for the studies on female images in Ming and Qing Dynasty and for contemporary women to think of life.
