As a traditional concept of artistic philosophy, aesthetics has not been limited to its original significances and impacts. World culture in modern society develops rapidly due to the new revolution of science and technology. People's aesthetic concept is showing its new vitality with the development and changes of material wealth and spiritual value. The concept of aesthetics has penetrated into various aspects of social culture, such as reconstructions of natural environment, designs of cultural landscape, discoveries and researches of science, and mental structure model of human being, etc. Without exception, aesthetics has been closely connected with translation studies and more and more people begin to pay attention to translation from the perspective of aesthetics. As a branch of translation studies, translation of English for Science and Technology (EST) has its own aesthetic characteristics. But many people consider EST as simplex and boring, so researches tend to analyze translations of literary works from the perspective of aesthetics. The thesis aims at exploring aesthetic senses of EST according to its unique structures and contents, rectifying aesthetic prejudices for EST translation, and putting forward effective strategies of translation in order to improve the standard and quality of EST translation.The thesis falls into five parts: the Introduction deals with a common misconception about EST translation, the important role of EST translation, framework of the thesis and its purpose; Chapter One expounds aesthetic consciousness in ancient China, development and effects of aesthetics as well as translation studies based on aesthetics; There are five sections in Chapter Two, particularly discussing aesthetic features of EST, including flexible beauty of EST words, creative beauty, rhetorical beauty, connotative beauty and structural beauty; Chapter Three advances five strategies of EST translation according to the above aesthetic features, including using jargons (terminology), employing idioms and four-character structures, creating new terms, employing amplification or addition and employing semantic extension. By illustrating many examples, the author hopes that aesthetic features involved in EST can be noticed and the skills to translate EST documentations can be improved; In the last part, a conclusion is reached that even EST has its own aesthetic features, and both researchers of translation studies and translators should eliminate the common misconception about EST translation and pay attention to their features from the perspective of aesthetics in the future and make EST translation more readable and understandable. |
