Suzhou Pingtan originated in Suzhou and flowed into Shanghai in the latter half of the 19th century. It became one of the most popular entertainments among the masses in the 30s of the 20th century. However, since the later 80s of the 20th century, Suzhou Pingtan has declined increasingly. It reflected in three aspects: the loss of audience; the lack of the theater for Suzhou Pingtan; some traditional repertoires was missing because of the famous older actors passed away. Today, the situation of Suzhou Pingtan is still not so well; though the relevant departments of government pay more attention on the development of Suzhou Pingtan for it was classified as the first batch of national intangible cultural heritageIt took many interviews and surveys from the point of the theater of Suzhou Pingtan in Minhang District, Shanghai, expecting that find some way to protect and develop Suzhou Pingtan.The thesis is divided into four parts: the preface,the conclusion and threechapters.The preface focuses on the reasons and purposes of the study; the research methodology and innovation of this thesis; make a brief definition of the concept in this thesis. Chapter I described the historical development and the current situation of the theater of Suzhou Pingtan. Chapter II expounded the plight of the performances space in Minhang District, Shanghai. Firstly, as for the actors, lacking of famous actors was a main problem, because many famous do not want to perform in theater; on the other side the bosses also do not have the motion to invite the famous actors. Secondly, in the audience, the younger are reluctant to enter the theater of Suzhou Pingtan, only the older love the form of story-telling. So, in the long way, there will be no one enjoying Suzhou Pingtan. Lastly, as for the theater of Suzhou Pingtan, due to a serious imbalance between revenue and expenditure, many private theaters was closed, there almost only public theater still existing nowadays. As a result, the theater lost its Market functions. Chapter III mainly introduced, in the point of management agencies and the management model, what the government has done under the difficult situation."The Supplementary discussion" mainly emphasized the development of Suzhou Pingtan. It consists of three parts: the relationship of the development of Suzhou Pingtan and the political power; the Plight of the modern development of the Suzhou Pingtan under The Context of Globalization; linking the measures have taken by local government, put forward some suggestions.
