| In western male discourse, "mother" is usually "the Other". In Chinese traditional discourse, "mother" seems to be the alienated image of women which reflects men's hegemonic will. In the film and television industry, men control the mainstream of language, and women are unable to own the rights of expressing themselves to a large extent. Women's existence, situation, experience and desire of saying are always ignored. In the film and television texts controlled by men, the dominant position of "mother" is digested, and her subjective consciousness is "eliminated". Some of them are bundled by traditional virtues, as angel mothers without themselves; some of them are completely tamed by patriarchal discipline, becoming its "accomplice" and "conspirator."As the leading one of female directors of " the Fifth Generation" in China, Li Shaohong works to challenge men's way of narrating, showing women's unique experience with female perspective, re-examining the history and culture, conveying women's special aesthetic experience as the subject. In her works, the mother image is a bright spot that can not be neglected. Surpassing male discourse, Li Shaohong adheres to independent female saying and writing, revealing many images of "mother" greatly different from traditional ones.In Li Shaohong's works, some mothers are tortured by pain of childbirth, moving towards death. On one side they are treated as tools of bearing,on the other side they become the symbols of death. Some try to get rid of the shackles shaped by patriarchal system, challenging the traditional roles of "mother", pursuing their rights in the realm of family, politics and economy. With the spirit of rebelling and the courage of daring to face the reality, the director walks away from traditional way of describing "mother", emphasizing the other side of "mother".These images of mothers shaped by Li Shaohong are provided with a kind of strong tragic color. But that reflects the director's particular thinking of mother's true existing status exactly. In the broad context of Chinese and Western cultures, the thesis would construct deep analysis of mother image in Li Shaohong's works from three aspects such as childbirth, breeding and self by the Western feminist theory and methodology of comparative literature, in order to display her reconstruction of mother image, lifting mother's veil covered by patriarchal system. |
