Chen Tingzhuo devoted all his life to the "Talking about Ci-poem in White Rain Chamber",which was recognized as one of the three great Ci-poems in the late Qing Dynasty.Although it has already been studied by many scholars,it is a pity that integrity was ignored in these studies.Therefore,the author of the present thesis attempts to do the systematic work.The thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter One introduces Chen Tingzhuo's life and living era,a turbulent time with which Chen showed his concern.Chapter Two discources the background of poetic theory.Firstly,the important views of respecting the poetry format in the literary criticism during the past dynasties are combed.Secondly,the tradition of insisting that poems are derived from emotion is been discussed.Finally,the author talks about the doctrine of analogy and moving entrusting.In Chapter Three, Chen's respecting of poetry format is analysed attentively,that is poem and ci sharing the same nature but differ in the famat.They both originate from emotion which is illustratd by examples.However,the philosophy is alway expressed by light poem;while,in ci,it is expressed in clearly sensen emotions.In Chapter Four,Chen's doctrine of depression is studied.Firstly,Chen's depression mainly concentrate on the works that expressed emotion.Except for the works valuing gentality,he also valued the true feeling in bold and unconstrained ci.Sencondly,the manifestation of the ci which results in the polysemy is summarized in this chapter.Thirdly,Chen's analogy and moving doctrine is analysed.Finally,the relashionship between depression and elegance is discussed. Chapter Five analyses his all-embracing idea and position of abandoning uncommon cis.
