Abstract/Summary:
This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text is selected from Fox and I: An Uncommon Friendship, written by biologist Catherine Raven. The source text is a literary text which focuses on a story that Catherine Raven and a wild red fox meet, associate, and gradually become friends. And the book is a multi-layered exploration of a world in which humans honor rather than dominate nature. The translator chose Chapters 1 to 2 for the translation report. The source text of the selected chapters is approximately 10,402 words. The selected text mainly introduces the special features of this fox,the author’s way of getting with the fox,and the North American wilderness environment. This translation report firstly introduces the background, the significance, the introduction of the author and the source text, and the structure of the translation report.Secondly,it briefly describes the process of translation practice. Finally, the translator analyzes the difficulties in the translation process and the corresponding methods at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels respectively. The difficulties at the lexical level are mainly related to the names of North American animals and plants,cultural-loaded words, polysemous words, and abstract words. The translator used footnote, choice of word-meanings,extension of word-meanings,and Chinese four-character expressions. The difficulties at the syntactic level are chiefly reflected in long and complex sentences and elliptical sentences. For the syntactic difficulties, the translator chose following the original syntactic order, reconstruction, amplification and omission. The difficulties at the textual level are primarily in cohesion and logical relationships between sentences. For the textual difficulties, the translator used substitution and conjunction.Through this translation practice, the translator strives to be faithful to the source text and hopes that the translation can provide a certain reference for the relevant translators and also expect to convey to target readers the friendship, growth and companionship between human and animals.
